What’s New: Ian Ferguson – Junk EP

Last summer, Ian Ferguson brought us a one-of-a-kind blend of Southern twang-infused psych-rock with his 2019 debut album, State of Gold. The Nashville-based artist has now released his brand new EP titled Junk, which acts as a compilation for the remaining unreleased songs from his State of Gold sessions. Discussing the new release Ferguson stated, “I found these unfinished songs on my computer one day and that night, in a Ruby-Tuesday’s-salad-bar induced fever dream, it all came to me. I could make something of these scraps. So I got to it and whipped this record up. It is, in a lot of ways, a purge of all things old in order to make room for all things new.”

Ian Ferguson’s Junk EP is the perfect “bonus track” extension for State of Gold; there’s a slightly polished sound that creates a cohesive product, while at the same time having the sought-after “demo” vibe, showing Ian’s raw and uncut musical capability. “Odyssey Pt. 1” kicks off the EP with a dramatic, King Tuff meets Ty Segall big-band feel that could have very well been part of his debut album. On contrary, the following track “Dot Reinhardt” has a sweeter country-steeped garage rock sound that seamlessly carries over throughout the EP. By the time “Crimson Love” enters with track 4, the resurgence of Ian Ferguson’s almost-theatrical climax of the EP is known, leaving the listener wanting more of the unknown on the come-down. The closing tracks “Odyssey Pt. 2” and “Country Son” probably have the most blatant, stripped-down attributions pointing towards their archetypal state as demos.
