Menomena have returned with their first new track releases in over ten years, The Insulation EP. This is definitely one of those bands that has traversed dynamically in sound and influence over the years. With each band member fronting their own leading track for vocals on the new 3 piece release, I can honestly say the bands initial influence resonates stronger now than ever. The current blends trace my memory back to tracks like Sepia, and the nostalgic early days of I Am The Fun Blame Monster.
The title/introductory track is pioneered in vocals by drummer Danny Seim, then followed by the legendary Justin Harris’ leading track. If you’re an older Menomena fan, these are reminiscent of the playful, diverting keyboard harmonies of E Is Stable among many others from The Fun Blame Monster. I keep tracing back to that album for more than just one reason. I’ve read that the band members have an array of emotions when reflecting upon it (understandably so, as it is their first). As a fan from the beginning with Menomena I think it’s important to always cue-in on and include those evocative ties no matter our reaction to them, because they are and always will be part of the pieces that come together to complete the puzzle … ok that, and I also just think they’re great songs!
The ending track Caravan, led in vocals by the awaited Brent Knopf, combines a symphony of instruments so convivially it’s an orchestra within itself. All 3 tracks are beyond words and no less than what I ever expected. Speaking on terms of what’s expected and on a final note, Menomena have announced what sounds like a reunion/farewell show in their hometown of Portland in August for one last go, and daringly stated their could be a Seattle date in the future but even that would be a stretch for them. Stay tuned!
