Cut Copy, who have been putting out music since the early 2000s, have always excelled at providing the soundtrack to a good time with skillful restraint. This signature approach continues with their latest track, “Solid,” their first new song in nearly five years.

The B-side, “A Decade Long Sunset,” unfolds as a seven-minute, experimental-ambient track. It’s psychedelic and drone-y, a bath of sound with a pulsating beat that doesn’t stray from the Australian band’s rhythmic nature. Graham Lee from the 1980s Australian band The Triffids contributed pedal steel on the song about halfway through.
“Solid” and “A Decade Long Sunset” are a very much a welcome return from a band that has not released new music since 2020’s Freeze, Melt. We hope this is a precursor for a welcomed new album on the horizon.
