Moloch/Monolyth – How Strange It Is To Miss You When You’re Right Here Next To Me

I’m excited to share a release from April with you guys that’s really set the chipper vibe for me as the days begin to warm up. Allow me to introduce French band Moloch/Monolyth, who show up in cheerful unison with indie-pop tones and choir chants that take my mind directly to a Los Campesinos influence.

The premier track on the album, Even Better Now, jumps straight to that big reveal moment – it’s subtle. it’s quiet. it’s raw and exposes all, as gentle synths honor bare vocals. It sets a soft, but serious undertone to lead by example throughout the remainder of the tracks. After all, what album would be proper if it didn’t painstakingly remind us to lightly question our own existence. Yet, as the album progresses, lyrical messages relay seeking ones’ inner courage to acknowledge and accept these unsettling thoughts. All while maintaining the backbone to show up and navigate through this maze we call life, bright side facing and all. My favorite transition and moment of the album I’d really like to highlight is the segue between tracks How Strange It Is To Miss You merging with next track, The Best Life. It’s a shift between light and dark. A stark contrast beautifully timed and written that resonates with the entire album. How strange It Is to Miss you reflects the shifts and parts of our souls we bare to inevitably lose through time, and how one can sense a longing of something so far gone in the past.

Translated through a melodic sense, the gentle shift and carry over into the next track, The Best Life, thrusts the album into a direction of upbeat, poppy harmonies that conversely end up giving it just a small touch of cynicism when rallied through the underlying tone of the lyrics.
Combine that with a pleasingly successful group aesthetic and dramatic, emotionally driven breakdowns, Moloch/Monolyth leave no stone unturned when going through the motions on their new release.
