Rats Department is a relatively new punk project based out of Los Angeles, formed by Slava Glushko and Gleb Bubnov in 2024. The duo released their debut single last year and has now followed it up with a second track, leading into their forthcoming debut album Culture Shock, out this Friday. “Dirty Dancing” is frenetic and fresh, merging punk energy with the laid back grit of L.A. surf-rock. At the heart of the track are the front person’s demanding and convincing vocals, working in lockstep with the jagged guitar, each element provoking the other in a dynamic push and pull.
The result is a sound that feels both nostalgic and defiant, like a rebellious nod to California’s underground scenes. It’s a track that doesn’t ask you for your attention so much as grab it by the collar. If Culture Shock follows the footsteps of “Dirty Dancing,” Rats Department may just carve out a distinctive space in the indie-punk landscape.
“Dirty Dancing” is released ahead of Rats Department’s upcoming album, Culture Shock, out August 8th, 2025 via Gusty Winds Ahead Records.
