Helsinki-based electronic-pop project Pearly Drops has released Pillow Face EP ahead of their third full-length album, The Voices Are Coming Back, out later this month. The album features the four songs on Pillow Face EP, plus six new tracks, tracing the group’s perspective of the surreal culture in Los Angeles. The project is comprised of Sandra Tervonen and Juuso Malin who both share backgrounds in sound production and design.
Opening track “Pillow Face” addresses how the obsession of appearances can lead to your own demise. The catchy hook over the bouncy melody starts the track off deceptively light, gradually unraveling into a darker reflections on identity, vanity, and self-erasure. Pearly Drops share that this track “feels like a quiet scream [that] lives in the tension between vanity and vanishing… how we reshape ourselves to be seen, then disappear beneath the very image we create.” The song asks the question of what happens when the image you chase becomes the thing that fully erases you.
“End Credit” continues on the bouncy riff, with a slightly darker tone. “Ratgirl” flips to a dance-clubby atmosphere – its central singalong anthem of “I’m a ratgirl” becomes both a playful declaration and an identity crisis, blurring the line between self-empowerment and self-parody. “Mermaid” closes out the four-track EP with a feature from Cub Sport. The closing track is a bit slower, with more pensive moments, demonstrating expected ebbs and flows on the upcoming album.
Pearly Drops calls Pillow Face EP and the forthcoming album a work of auto-fiction, drawing experiences from their time in the city of angels and stretching them to something absurdly exaggerated and dream-like. Through etherial glossy textures, and emotionally charged lyrics, the duo crafts a sonic diary that feels both intimate and alien. The Voices Are Coming Back promises to expand this surreal narrative, offering an insightful reflection on identity, fame, and the dissonant struggle of navigating a city built on illusion.
