Sam Austins’ mix of funk, R&B, and tech-house hyper-pop vibes is a testament to his commitment to his craft. Born in Detroit and now based in Los Angeles, Austins released a new EP titled The woods, vol. 1 this year, highlighting his growth in showmanship and songwriting ability – skills that seemed misunderstood for a long time. Austins has been at it for a long time; at 29 years old, he’s finally finding his lane. He’s a singer-songwriter at heart, with intimate lyrics delivered in a high-pitched, inviting vocal register. Sam Austins managed to do something on this EP that many producers and musicians struggle to do, which is make the songs feel alive and match the energy of a live show. It’s a sonically heart-pumping, vividly alive documentation of who Austins is becoming – a future leader of the next wave of pop artists.
From the opening track, “Smoke Break,” with its pulsating, hyper-pop-influenced drum programming, hushed and whispered vocals, and inviting refrain (“baby can we go outside I need a smoke break”), he seduces you into his trance and into his world. That momentum carries into “Say What You Mean,” a song that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Prince album if he were making music in 2025. Austins takes cues from the greatest, but he knows to be great himself, he must forge a singular sound. On this eight-song, 20-minute EP, he’s just begun writing the story of his career’s future trajectory. The EP closes with “Seasons,” the viral hit that has earned him a massive following that we are sure will only continue to grow as his reputation as an exciting pop musician with a live show matching his recorded energy reaches new heights.
Getting tickets to one of his shows right now is signing up for a good time or showing up early to see him at Project Pabst July 27th is a must.
