Show Review: Sonoda & Very Nice Massage & Shindigs (SDCP, 11/23/19)

Meditative-pop quartet Sonoda played an intimate set at the low-key San Diego Content Partners (SDCP) venue this past weekend. Sonoda began as a solo bedroom-pop project by it’s frontwoman Lisa Sonoda, and over the years it has since grown to the permanent four-person collaboration, comprising of additional members Adrian Garcia (guitar), Eddie Ramos (drums), and Jacob Maag (bass, synth).

Closing out the night, Sonoda followed openers Shindigs (San Diego-based dream-pop) and tour partners Very Nice Massage, an experimental duo from New York. The warped vocals of Very Nice Massage blended perfectly with the band’s choice of playful (and vaguely familiar) background imagery; including dream-like clips from Beatrix Potter and Wind in The Willows. The surreal combination was strangely alluring, seducing you into a blissfully hypnotic state.

Sandwiched between the traveling acts were local band Shindigs, who played a short and light-hearted set. The San Diego-based group are known for their prancing dream-pop jangles that instantly put you in a happy, chilled-out mindset.

Sonoda’s zen stage set-up matched their presence and music – strewn along the edge of the large keyboard front-and-center were pink and white flowers, and stacked on top were Himalayan salt-crystal lamps. Lisa Sonoda rounded out the group’s etherial presence with the assistance of Tibetan singing bowls and miniature wind chimes utilized throughout the performance. Watch the full set below:
