Project Diem was conceived in Boston by Dominic Dellaquila and Meghan Seeberg (hence Diem, like “DM” for Dom and Meghan), and has since expanded into a five-piece collaboration. They released their debut album Pluto in 2020 in Brooklyn, where they are currently based. Their new single “Dead Pop” comes from their upcoming album, which will be out later this summer. The album was recorded in a farmhouse in upstate New York, a setting that allowed their indie rock tunes to swirl on the palette of the rural wilderness.
In “Dead Pop,” lush guitars and analog textures intertwine with distant echoes of lo-fi pop, breathing a warm honesty into the music. The track begins with arpeggiators and electronic layers that immediately engulf and hold you, before suddenly releasing you into the flow of a chill indie-rock-meets-dream-pop melody. Meghan’s vocals convey a ton of emotion, telling a story of love and loss. Moments of psychedelic build-ups allow the track to breathe in a way that keeps the listener suspended, while the chorus is incredibly catchy. Its equal parts nostalgic haze and jagged edge curate an emotional weather that will echo throughout the upcoming album.
“Dead Pop” is released ahead of Project Diem’s upcoming album, Dead Pop, out August 22nd via Shy Ruckus. Pre-order available here.
