Show Review: Tanlines (Soda Bar, 1/31/2024)

Tanlines are an electronic indie-pop band formed by Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm in 2008, who hit the indie scene hard with their debut album Mixed Emotions in 2012. Following their next album (Highlights, 2015) and a fun EP for kids (Presents, 2018), comes their most recent album, The Big Mess, which is out now on Merge Records.

The album’s first single “Outer Banks” was released with a fun and quirky music video demonstrating what both members have been up to since 2015:

The Brooklyn-based band played in San Diego for the first time since 2015 as part of a short west coast run to promote their new album. The band seemed to be enjoying themselves on stage alongside the audience who embraced the band with cheerful clapping, dancing, and nostalgic singalongs. Jesse Cohen made mention of how much he loved the crowd engagement, which made the band feel comfortable and loose as the set went on. The band played a solid mix of old and new songs which all blended up together to give us a fun and rewarding mid-week night out.
