Ducks Ltd. are at the forefront of the current jangly pop scene. One listen to their new album “Harms Way” and you begin to understand why they’ve become the leaders of the resurgent genre. The album is their second LP and it serves as evidence of the band’s progression into becoming a fully realized project.
The band self recorded and released their first EP in 2019. The EP caught the attention of Carpark Records who re-released the debut EP in 2021 and shortly after, released their debut album to critical acclaim. What started out with home recordings and rough ideas for songs on their first releases, become something fully formed and filled with life on Harm’s Way. The mixing and production on the record work in harmony with the underlaying instrumentals. Lead singer Tom McGreevy’s sense of urgency is paired with sincere, heart on sleeve lyrics, which altogether presents you with a sound that is joyful, pleasant, and a reminder for what this type of rock/pop music can be. The general aesthetic of the album is very human and welcoming.
The band came down to San Diego to play songs from the new album alongside a selection of older songs on July 10th at The Casbah. The historic venue near Little Italy offered the perfect setting for Ducks Ltd. The crowd was engaged and singing along from start to finish. One guy even got overly excited and looked like he was trying to jump on stage and take over vocal duties from the lead singer. He was stopped by his buddies and I’m grateful for that because the band was dialed in and played a fun, exciting show.
