Guest In The Car – “Music For The Kids”

Guest In The Car are a brand new 4-piece band based out of London, UK. “Music For The Kids” is their debut single, released independently last month. The track contains a pool of swirling guitars under a blanket of fuzz that completely engulfs you for its duration. It is an emotionally charged shoegaze track with hints of post- and alternative-rock, that promises to captivate you with its apocalyptic energy and wonky synths. The band formed in May 2023, consisting of Rob (rhythm guitar/vocals), Joey (bass), Jack (drums) and James (lead guitar).

Rob of the band describes how “Music For The Kids” was conceived in a post-pandemic world: “I wrote this track just after lockdown, It was inspired by shoegaze and also the glitchy sounds and over-compressed drums of hyperpop, but recreated with live instruments.” Thematically, the song is as self-aware as it is about fantasy: “It’s about escaping reality and asserting yourself in an uncaring world… (the song) speaks to why shoegaze is having a resurgence. People want to escape into a world where they are allowed to be themselves.”

He adds, “I liked the idea of a track like this knowing what kind of track it is, who it’s for and how it’s meant to make you feel. Hence ‘Music for the Kids’, it’s a track for a nihilistic generation who needs an escape.” Rob goes on to explain how the lyrics align with this notion: “Don’t be perfect be a narcissist is about asserting yourself in an uncaring world that is so void of meaning, made for a world where nothing exists.”
