mary in the junkyard is one of the UK’s most promising new creative forces and their new single, “this is my california,” is something of a breath of fresh air delivered through an emotional, whispering messenger. Vocalist Clari Freeman-Taylor has a knack for delivering her shaky lyrics with an urgent latency while the rest of the band, Saya Barbaglia (bass, viola) and drummer David Addison, follow suit. Taking their sound beyond the ethereal pop, this track showcases the band’s ability to create a relaxed, exploratory atmosphere while maintaining contact with their roots of melodic storytelling.
The London-based trio convened together while in school to make “silly songs” as a break from studying orchestral music. “this is my california,” follows the band’s debut EP this old house, released earlier this year via AMF Records. Lyrically, the new track is a departure from the band’s dominating metaphorical imagery as it shifts to more of a serene vision of creating something for themselves, Freeman-Taylor explains:
“‘this is my california’ is a nostalgic song about finding my own dreams. Seeing ‘California’ through films and TV always felt like a paradise or idea of success that didn’t really resonate with me. Also in the song there’s a lot of lyrics about ‘Something lifting you out’ – growing up me and my friends would climb everything, roofs and trees, maybe to feel like we were escaping the place we were in or feel a kind of wonder of how small it was from high up.”
mary in the junkyard will make their live debut in the US next month in New York City, supporting Model/Actriz at TV Eye on Wed. Dec. 4th (tickets), and headlining a free show at Baby’s All Right the following night on Thu. Dec. 5th (RSVP).
