Dead You are a relatively new project based out of Mid-City Los Angeles. Since forming in the summer of 2023, they have released just handful of songs but have plans to release their debut album next month. Members Jon (vocals, guitar) and Marko (bass) are longtime musical partners who have played together since their high school days. The three-piece is rounded out by Jorge on drums, who also plays in the indie band Pardon Me Sir. Dead You have stated they draw a lot of inspiration from artists like MJ Lenderman, Tyler, The Creator, Jawbreaker, Title Fight, Dinosaur Jr, NOFX, Movements, Neck Deep, Newfound Glory, Bad Religion, and bands from the Philly/DC music scene such as Glitterer, Tiger’s Jaw, and Balance and Composure.
“Lush” is Dead You’s new single, taken from their upcoming debut album, No Virtue Without Temptation. Jon’s vocals on the track have a melodically piercing effect of cutting through the noise of the guitar, allowing for the hook of the song to shine through. Telling the story of a failed summer romance, the lyrics have a dual purpose in not only conveying emotion, but also intentionally tethering to the melody in how they are selected and sung. With this in mind, the vocals feel very deliberate which explains how the track provides you with a gut punch of emotion without it ever feeling sappy or unearned. Everything about this song has a purpose and makes me very excited to hear the rest of the album whenever that time comes.
