Dog Race is a five-piece band from Bedford and London that brings new life to dark wave and gothic dance music, infusing it with their own unique blend of weirdness and emotional honesty. The group consists of siblings Katie Healy (vocals) and Jed Healy (drums), along with James Kelly (guitar), Dillon Willis (keys), and Will Macnab (bass). Return The Day is a five-song journey that immerses listeners in the haze of exhaustion, co-dependency, and emotional stagnation. Throughout the EP, the band gradually unravels the devastation of fading happiness and a fractured sense of self, where restless nights are embraced and personal growth is sacrificed to maintain stability.
“Barrel Meets the Badger” opens the EP with a moody atmosphere, drenched in minor chords, and builds to a powerful climax. It sets the stage for the vast, immersive world that the following tracks explore. “The Leader” injects more energy, expanding on the gothic-stylized dance elements, with chant-like vocals adding a deeper emotional dimension to Dog Race’s music. “Return The Day (Colors)” introduces a more frantic dark wave sound, sustaining the EP’s sense of urgency and unease. “40 Winks to Wyoming” is the closest to a ballad, with eerie synthesizers framing Katie Healy’s hushed vocals. Return The Day closes with “It’s The Squeeze,” a haunting track anchored by a hypnotic beat, with Katie’s panicked delivery capturing the vulnerability that defines the EP’s recurring themes of emotional concealment.
“A soundscape born from sleepless nights, intrusive thoughts, and the quiet war between the mind and the world around me. Each track pulls at the threads of cultish beliefs and everyday expectations, exposing the weight they place on someone already battling inner turmoil.”
