Washington, D.C.’s BRNDA have unveiled their latest single, “Peach Pit,” a warmly textured and delightfully offbeat track that arrives ahead of the band’s forthcoming fourth album, out this fall. BRNDA has been around for just over a decade, and their joy in making and performing music exudes through the song. Featuring Dave Lesser and Mark McInerney on guitars, Leah Gage on drums, and Nick Stavely on bass, the four-piece functions as a true collective, with all members contributing vocals and shaping the band’s sound.
Leah’s vocals add a playful unpredictability to “Peach Pit,” bringing a fresh layer of character to the song’s laid-back sunny disposition. BRNDA melds angular and familiar guitar riffs, jittery rhythms, and meandering bass lines with artful experimentation, creating a welcomed tension that further spotlights the band’s sound. The result is a melodic soundscape that feels both familiar and thrillingly offbeat, inviting listeners to discover something new with every listen. As the opening track, it sets a quirky stage for the album to follow – a gentle push into the remaining eleven songs that will lean further into the nuances of the band’s art-punk instincts and post-punk eccentricities.
Rooted in both nostalgia and introspection, “Peach Pit” delves into the complex emotions of youth – an era when trying to fit in could feel like a battle, and pain was often brushed aside. It reflects on those formative years with clarity and compassion, recognizing that the meaning of what we create (or leave behind) can take years to fully come into focus.
“What is the Peach Pit? It’s filthy, old and not even real anymore, though some might remember it. Peach Pit the song is old in two ways. Lyrically, it recalls experiences when just trying to fit in and exist was its own kind of pain. More specifically, it recalls days of youth, when it was easy to escape and erase pain. Musically, it is born from a years-old jam, given structure and meaning in the present. Sometimes, it can take time to discover what you have created and what you have destroyed, if you discover it at all.”
