Cloud Nothings rereleased duo albums Life Is Only One Event and The Black Hole Understands, which were originally released for the first time five years ago via Bandcamp during our Covid era. The rereleases now expand the content to all streaming platforms and most exceptionally, two rare vinyls for the first time. The intent behind this reissuing, according to Cloud Nothings’ Dylan Baldi, was to further spread the objective behind the albums to a broader train of thought and wider range of emotions.
As the two albums were originally issued and published during COVID, the band was initially averse to rewinding back to this point in time, as it felt (and still feels) so restrictive to such a specific moment in time that really is incomparable to anything else we’ve endured before and since then. The virtue behind this decision was the realization that the lyrics and the songs aren’t restricted and limited to that time, but rather the notion that they are present-day, still completely relatable and can take on new form, shape and presence in where we stand today in a world of upheavals. I thought to myself after reading Baldi’s standpoint on this via Trebelzine, what a delicate notion, to be able to repurpose the meaning and intent of what was created during such a turbulent time, and to have a completely refreshed and renewed understanding of what these songs and albums both mean as a whole, and what direction they can lead you on an emotional platform.
I thought the track “I Rise At Dawn” from the album Life Is Only One Event, was an overall great example in how the perspective can shift to something entirely fresh and applicable to what I wake up and feel today. “I’m leaving in the morning if you don’t want me/ will you help me to go on.” Those lyrics render a moment in time we’ve all faced in having to be honest with ourselves and our truths, while still needing that last push of confirmation to get up and move on. Forward trajectory can sometimes be the hardest to grasp, and these lyrics stand strongly for that during any situation of strife we become entangled with in our lives.
Both, Life Is Only One Event and The Black Hole Understands, are now available on all streaming platforms, so dig in!
