Planet Shelby – skipa!

Planet Shelby’s new EP skipa!, released last month, contains seven songs and is nineteen minutes long. It’s a really easy listen that, of course, left me wanting more. When you find yourself experiencing one of those days, needing to wake up and escape, this is the EP to put on. The tracks all have a soft, gentle essence, with emotional lyrics bestowed upon them.

The EP begins with a quick instrumental track – perfectly timed and perfectly placed. Add that to the seamless transitions from track to track and it’s become one of my favorite summertime releases to listen to in sequence. The next two tracks are my favorites from the album, the first being my initial introduction to Planet Shelby: “Commander Codeine,” followed by the track “I Just Hope Kaapo Kakko Is Having Fun,” a beautiful song. If I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it again: there’s something about lyrics I can’t quite initially decipher and distinguish that draw me in. There’s some level of mystique and curiosity that really entrances me.

skipa! takes a slight uplifting trajectory in the next few tracks, with a refresh in tone but still maintaining that core essence of pain and lonesomeness within. Track “Bakesailing” blends into the next with such strategic perfection – this is one of my favorite transitions of the EP as it leads to my favorite track of all from the composition, “…And Isn’t Happy.” It gives off an acoustic, Midwest emo vibe mixed in with some math rock. I think this song is the best testament from the release of Planet Shelby’s potential, and I eagerly await to hear what’s in store from them in the future.

Lastly, the EP is concluded with another acoustic track that really pulls together the diversified emotions displayed throughout the arrangement. Overall, it’s a fast listen, but definitely one of my favorites to put on when I’m in my feels and just need that solace I’m longing for.
