catnap are a three-piece band from Orlando, blending a sound rooted in emo and indie alternative rock with a grungy, dreamy undercurrent. The group consists of Nina (vocals/guitar), Julia (bass), and Angie (drums). Their latest track, “can’t go back,” is a vulnerable look at the grief that comes with realizing some parts of the past are out of reach.
Nina’s vocals are feminine yet strong and assured, mirroring the song’s lyrical content. The lyrics reflect on a relationship that once felt new and full of possibility but has since slipped out of reach, leaving self-preservation as the only way forward. The repeated line “I can’t go back, and I won’t go back” becomes a mantra – part boundary, part self-assurance. While there’s a thread of melancholy running through it, the song ultimately reads as an honest, resolute reflection rather than a lament.
“can’t go back” closes with an intense instrumental breakdown that feels like a final burst of emotional release and exhale, unlocking everything that the words alone can’t quite convey. It’s a fitting conclusion to a track with themes revolving around moving forward, and an exciting preview for what’s to come on catnap’s upcoming new EP.
“can’t go back” is released ahead of catnap’s upcoming EP, songs from the darkroom, out March 13th, 2026 via Blunt Buddy.
