Sex Mask from Melbourne has released another indie-punk-meets-post-punk single titled “Cold,” a song about obsession, love, and destructive impulses. The pulsing bass guitar on the track drives home a sense of compulsion and cyclical behavior. The lyrics reflect this, unfolding as a stream of consciousness – full of run-on sentences and tangled ideas strung together – exposing the inner workings of someone caught in a downward spiral. Sex Mask packs a multitude of thought bubbles into this track, effectively channeling the emotional chaos that inspired it. There’s a faint indie rock nod, especially towards the end, adding texture to the many genres Sex Mask pull from. With “Cold,” the band continues to expand their range, honing a sound that is dark yet sensual, danceable yet pensive.
The band is comprised of Vicente Moncada on drums and production, Wry Gray on vocals and lyrics, and Kaya Martin on guitars and synths. Together, the trio craft a sound that feels both familiar and unpredictable. Biting statements like “Now you’re just a heat exchanger,” and “flip the noose, pretend the phone rang” shows a disconnect, but there’s also a bit of self-awareness seeping through the chaos. The push and pull between numbness and clarity makes “Cold” feel even more so alive, even as it traverses through darkness.
“Cold was written several years ago somewhere near the base of Mt Fuji. I was very unwell, bedridden and all the doctors were under the belief my state was induced by the influence of a rare neurotoxin I had picked up from eating fresh frogs and crabs in stormwater drains all over Japan’s suburban tunnel systems. I was filling glass jars with may beetles, aging them until they became like preserves.”
