“Outcast” is the debut single from Alma Owren, a 19-year-old Norwegian-born artist, now based in Los Angeles. From growing up on a farm by the woods, to living in one of the largest musical hubs, “Outcast” is a powerful entry into the music world for Owren, and a promising start to a career ahead. Her background as a violinist, guitarist, and producer is pronounced throughout the song; full of tasteful swells and soundscapes alongside emotionally-charged, vulnerable lyrics. Owren has been playing and writing music for as long as she can remember, and transitioning from home recordings to working in a professional studio has allowed even more creative control and ability to channel her synesthesia into a final product that she can be proud of.
“Outcast” is about not feeling at home and battling doubt in times when you feel like your efforts are futile and pointless. For Owren, it is clear that being a “foreigner” is a hump that needs to be conquered, maybe more than once. The song doesn’t quite give resolution to this conflict, as this is something that can persistently be a pain point for someone in her position. Learning to to deal with the feelings of isolation and the voices telling you to quit, is something pondered in the song. Time is another theme that reverberates throughout the song as well, it is something that has a ubiquitous presence underlying these fears. In “Outcast,” Alma Owren shows that she is not afraid to reach into these emotional depths to create something worthwhile and beautiful out of the rawness of her experience.
Alma Owren will be releasing her debut EP, Under the Surface, later this year via AWAL USA.
