Maia Friedman – “New Flowers”

Last week Maia Friedman released “New Flowers” ahead of her upcoming sophomore album, Goodbye Long Winter Shadow. The New York-based musician is best known for her involvement with both Dirty Projectors and Coco. Friedman debuted her solo project with Under The New Light in 2022, and the singles released so far make it clear that she is elevating her musical compositions. “New Flowers” and “On Passing” have an atmospheric quality, with instrumentals that tell a story, much like a movie score.

“New Flowers” has a gorgeous arrangement of orchestral elements backed by tight guitar playing and a rhythm section that demands your attention on every aspect of the song. It’s an impressive follow-up to the new album’s first single, “On Passing,” and her debut album. Without being too specific about their content, the lyrics are bittersweet, inviting, and provide a sense of hope for a new chapter in a life that hasn’t fully been told. Friedman’s vocals in “New Flowers” are strong and self-assured. Paired with the orchestral arrangement of the instruments, her voice delivers on a playfulness and whimsical nature, interplaying with her lyrics. The melody shines through and never gets lost and this is due to Friedman’s ability to commit to the execution of her vision. The abrupt ending of the song is not only fitting; it’s the next puzzle piece in what I’m sure will be a thoughtful and well-produced full-length album that’ll complete the picture of what Maia Friedman has in store for us with Goodbye Long Winter Shadow.

“New Flowers” is released ahead of Maia Friedman’s sophomore album titled Goodbye Long Winter Shadow, out May 9th on Last Gang Records. Pre-order via Bandcamp is available here.
