When you first see zzzahara walk on stage, their positive and understated energy immediately sets the tone for the type of rock show you’re about to experience. It’s an “anything goes, we’re here because we love writing and playing music” kind of vibe. Before the first song even wrapped up, the lead guitarist’s string broke, but Zahara of the band quickly engaged the crowd with funny anecdotes about life on tour – small things like a mishap in the Pacific Northwest or the drummer getting food poisoning and having to chug a bottle of Pepto-Bismol to “keep the demons away” (you know what I mean!).
It’s this quick wit and sharp emotional foundation that defines their stage presence. Before they even finished with their stalling banter, the lead guitarist was ready to pick up where they left off. The small but dedicated crowd was more than ready to embrace what zzzahara was offering at The Casbah in San Diego. She played all of the songs from her new album, Spiral Your Way Out, plus a couple of songs from previous releases and a deep cut or two. Between songs, the crowd egged the band along with a few enthusiastic “hell yeah, brother!”s. At one point, someone confessed to the room, “I don’t know how to love,” to which Zahara replied, “Oh shit, you don’t know how to love? I don’t know how to love either.”
Despite the minor guitar-string fluke, zzzahara absolutely killed it. Their energy and raw authenticity transformed the night at The Casbah into something special. By the end of the night, the crowd wasn’t just applauding; they were reveling in the magic of a band that knows how to make every moment, even the unplanned ones, unforgettable. It’s part of what makes zzzahara a special band and if you like indie pop music, seeing them live is a must.
