Show Review: Sports Team (HOB Voodoo Room, 12/9/2024)

Sports Team are out now on their first U.S. promotional tour for their upcoming third album, Boys These Days. The forthcoming album will be released next year via Bright Antenna and Distiller Records. The London-based band consists of frontman Alex Rice, guitarists Rob Knaggs and Henry Young, drummer Al Greenwood, keyboardist Ben Mack, and bassist Oli Dewdney.

Just a few days before hitting the stage at The House of Blues Voodoo Room in San Diego, the group were robbed at gunpoint in Vallejo, CA. As a big fan of the band since their first release Winter Nets and killer debut album Deep Down Happy, I must admit I was concerned the band would cancel their tour. Fortunately for me and the other attendees of the show, our worries were overblown because the band trudged forward and showed up to San Diego in good spirits and with their signature quirky charm.

The band hit the stage right at 9pm and didn’t waste much time getting the show going, going directly into “Camel Crew”, a fan favorite. It’s sometimes hard to gauge how much energy the crowd is willing to give back to the touring act, but the San Diego crowd was excited to finally have the band play in their city and screamed along to every word of the song. This set the tone for a set from the band that felt brief, yet full of energetic, sharp-faced, indie rock. Over the next hour the band played songs from their first two albums like “M5″, “Kutcher”, “The Game”, and the “The Drop”, mixed in with new songs from the previously mentioned upcoming release. The crowd was ready to dance and didn’t miss a single beat throughout the whole set which included songs no one had heard before.

The stand out song being unreleased track “Maybe When We’re Thirty”; a slowed-down, more grown-up and nuanced song from a band ready to head into their next chapter as a group. The song sounded confident, much like how the band sounded all night. If this is the direction the band is heading in, we’re all there for it. The live show was explosive, dynamic, and had everything I was looking for from a rock band that seems to be more rare in the current landscape of music.
