In a recent live Substack stream, Yoni Wolf, the creative force behind WHY?, offered an intimate glimpse into the journey of his new song, “Ocracoke.” Appearing on stream a little nerve-wracked and with a fresh haircut, he went deep into the creation process on the new song with Aupheus. Sage Francis facilitated the meeting between Yoni Wolf and the UK-based producer, sending Yoni the beat which he described as instantly “infectious.” The song was almost going to be on Aupheus’ album, but they decided to release it as a collaborative track instead, as they agreed it felt more like a WHY? song.
“Ocracoke” immediately reminded me of old WHY? and early Anticon releases. The lyrics feel more weird and obscure, reminiscent of releases like Mumps, etc. and earlier. Yoni’s monthly session on his Substack series Yoni Wolf’s Wet Paint revealed that multiple iterations of the lyrics were explored until the song found its final form. Remarkably, two verses were inspired by a decade-old demo – a session where Yoni had once rapped over a beat created by his brother, Josiah Wolf, about being in the hospital. He described how part of his creative process includes holding onto traces of ideas, and this repository of lines, poems, and snippets lingers in his mind for years until he finds the right use for them. He also shared how the melody over Aupheus’ beat came naturally, and how those almost-forgotten lyrics found new life on this track:
“The lyrics just felt very native to his beat and that’s how I knew. I was just like okay, yeah, those work and I always had those lyrics sort of in mind or on the back burner. I have other lyrics like that, that haven’t quite worked yet. I have stacks of printouts, lines, poems, whatever, that haven’t found their way into stuff yet that aren’t full lyric-sheet songs, but they’re like bits and pieces that I like. I’ve had this line ‘face sliced up like a UPC code’ in my head for years until I finally used it on something, I don’t even remember what. I’ve had ‘tripping over skirts loose in the aisles’ – like there’s these little lines that I have, that I know I want to plug into something, and I finally found a place for that one last year. So yeah, things come, and I find a way.”

Yoni compared this creative persistence to his love for crossword puzzles – challenging, intricate, and something he commits to solving over time. As he puts it, “I’ll do it for like two weeks. Every morning, I’ll sit and have my smoothie and work on the same crossword puzzle because like, I just have to see it through to the end.” Although he sees this as simply part of his nature and personality, the analogy perfectly captures his belief in nurturing even the smallest sparks of inspiration until they’re fully realized. The production process of “Ocracoke” was also nothing short of a meticulous craft. The beat, supplied by Aupheus, forms the backbone of the track – with a distinctive “hah” sound at the very beginning, sampled from the producer’s toddler. This playful snippet became a catalyst for creativity; Yoni layered his own harmonization over it, melding organic warmth with ethereal texture. He added more depth to the beat by adding a sub-bass, giving the track dimension while still allowing the melody to breathe. The track is named after Ocracoke Island off the North Carolina coast – a name Yoni has always been fond of and felt was perfectly suited as the song’s title.
While “Ocracoke” began as a reflection on a tender, youthful romance now fading into memory, its thematic landscape evolved significantly during development. What started as a personal recounting of a past love eventually morphed into a broader, more generalized meditation on regret and the “what ifs” that follow lost connections; “Call me if you ever want to see who I turned out to be, I’m not as pretty but I’m living freely. Do you ever wonder what we could have been if we waited long enough to begin?” Weaving together personal history with universal themes and absurd concepts is something Yoni Wolf has always injected into his work and it has become one of his many artistic signatures.
