Show Review: Reyna Tropical (Kilby Court, 5/31/2025)

On May 31st, a Saturday night, Reyna Tropical turned Kilby Court into the place to be. The room, which at one point felt mildly warm and somewhat timid, transformed into a scorching, palpitating, sweaty, dance-filled, and joyful night of wonderful self-expression. Everyone in attendance came from different backgrounds, but what we all shared was the message Reyna Tropical spreads to the world. It’s easy to be cynical given the current climate, but in that room, there wasn’t a single thing to be down about.

The crowd didn’t start dancing right away, but when you radiate the kind of energy and charisma that lead singer Fabiola Reyna brings to the stage, she’s going to get you to loosen up. By halfway through the set, we all had to take breaks on the patio because Kilby was hot, and not a single person in that room was dry.

The music is nimble and light, constantly shifting between rhythms, and Fabiola’s flowing guitar playing enhances the playfulness of the tracks. The lyrics center on moving forward, love, self-expression, and finding joy amidst the struggles we all experience while discovering ourselves and growing as people. The positivity of the music was palpable. Reyna Tropical is a reminder of the power of live music and how it brings us all together, even when we don’t share the same story.
