Star Card is a lo-fi noise-pop band from Brooklyn, New York, and “Lena” is the debut single ahead of their upcoming album, Trash World. “Lena” offers a first glimpse into the group’s evolution beyond the Freak World EP released in 2023, which was essentially a collection of frontperson Calley’s bedroom recordings. The project began as a solo effort by Calley, and later expanded to include Jake Whitener (Sunshine Convention, Kira Skye) on guitar, Jackson Tarricone (Voicemail) on bass, and Brendan Landis (Receive, Hey Exit, Glifter) on drums.
“Lena” is about breaking free from suffocating surroundings. Sometimes, even with support, the grip of certain situations feels unshakable – like trying to escape a fish farm. As expected from a track with such an emotionally heavy concept, it delivers plenty of cathartic moments, with Calley belting out the chorus, “Oh Lena, bite the hand that feeds you.” The track features subtle twangy touches while staying true to its slightly noisy, emotionally-driven pop roots. If “Lena” is any indication, Trash World promises to be a cathartic ride through noise, nuance, and the beauty of letting go.
