The Goods – Don’t Spoil The Fun

Oakland-based The Goods’ debut album Don’t Spoil The Fun is an upbeat exploration through retro jangle-pop sounds. Written and produced by frontman Rob Good (of Ryli, Sob Stories, and Cocktails) in his home studio, the album captures the artist’s signature blend of jangling guitars, melodic hooks, and heartfelt songwriting. Joined by bassist Chevron Arena and guitarist Gabriel Monnot, The Goods channel a shimmering sound that feels both familiar and fresh.

Don’t Spoil The Fun is comprised of eleven tracks that were written over the last five years – some even predating the band’s first self-titled EP. “We recorded several versions before finally landing on something that felt right,” Good shares. “This album is us leveling up our sound and finding our own style.” And with this record, they succeed in paving their own path in the jangle-pop universe. Touching on themes of failed relationships, self-reflection and solitude, and even shut-down venues; Don’t Spoil The Fun feels very personal yet relatable.

While many of the songs are on the shorter-side, they don’t miss the opportunity to work in rising climactic moments of clarity and alternately slowing things down to emphasize emotion. For example, the opening two-minute-long track “April Fools” has a guitar solo that comes in halfway through the song, and “Sunday Morning Out of the Blue” has a fun and urgent breakdown towards the end of the song, giving it texture and shape. In true power-pop fashion, these songs feel simultaneously rushed and full of energy, but also laid back and textured with peaks and valleys.

Each track in Don’t Spoil The Fun glows with melodic brightness, even through navigating heavier emotional terrain. The Goods’ debut album twinkles with a jangly immediacy and thoughtful nuance, balancing punchy pop moments with a warm, introspective through line. The album gathers its listeners into a sunlit world that is equal parts vibrant and vulnerable. The Goods offer proof that brightness doesn’t equal simplicity, it can also be layered.
