Corridor – Mimi

Corridor are a band that give us a new spin on the typical post-punk sound you hear today by melding with other genres and experimental patches. In their latest album, Mimi, they accomplish just that with 8 tracks that consecutively bring novelty and new flavors with the album’s ebbs and flows. The psychedelic opening track Phase IV has a sonic comparability to bands like Stereolab but with angular guitars and a French flair (after all, Corridor are from Montreal). Jump Cut has a cool appreggiator flute that cuts the softer hum-like vocals of the song.

Halfway through the album, Caméra fakes you out with an ambient electronic opening that then drops into a standard post-punk guitar riff, joined with a droning synthesizer in the backdrop to keep it intriguing. The penultimate Mourir Demain hits hard with a heavy intro followed by a mellower hymnal-inspired melody that doesn’t pick back up until the end of the song. Jangly pop number Pellicule closes out the album as track number 8, a nod to the band’s previous sound. Corridor have been around for over 10 years at this point but are proving that they are keeping it fresh while also staying true to their noisier roots as you can trace a breadcrumb trail of jangle pop and post-punk tunes leading them to this point.
