Tomás Tomás – Sweet Sleep EP

Tomás Tomás is a project curated by singer-songwriter and producer Tom Fattorusso from Monroe-Woodbury, New York, now residing in Brooklyn/New York City. On his new EP, Sweet Sleep, Tomás Tomás strips back the sound, revealing seven tender and texturized tracks he calls, “music you walk to.” From the opening fuzzy guitar line of “9th Life” and lo-fi vocals, the EP immediately gives the impression of something intimate, something that feels like equal parts bedroom confession and city street soundtrack.

“Hush” builds on this feeling, with sonic additions that make the EP more expansive and layered. A gentle teetering melody on the track adds a level of familiarity and warmth. “Brought” pushes down and stretches out this teetering melody to reveal a spacier, punchier version of the song that feels more immediate yet still atmospheric, as if the melody itself is being refracted through different emotional lenses. This switch from fragile to urgent shows Tomás Tomás’ ability to reshape a motif into contrasting moods that carry the music forward with momentum, while maintaining intimacy in the process.

With a twangy guitar up front, “Wake” builds a dreamy and atmospheric backdrop for Tomás Tomás to lay bare his emotional lyrics pondering life and change. Right from the song name, “I Gotta Look Up More,” feels like a track made for NYC, and the opening crowd sounds immediately ground the song in the city’s restless energy. The chatter and ambient noise blur into the rhythmic guitar, making Tomás Tomás’ reflections feel both personal and communal – an anthem for looking upward amid the constant motion of life.

“Those Lines” has a conclusive feel to it, almost making you believe it to be the final song on the release. This rolls into the EP’s true final track, “Fever Dream.” As the EP’s longest track, this song is packed with emotion, as if it were one last chance for Tomás Tomás to state his piece before the conclusion of the release. Sweet Sleep is a collection of songs that convey vulnerability with subtle atmospheric experimentation while maintaining a lo-fi, personal feel to them. It’s a strong debut that shows Tomás Tomás can balance sensuality against noise, all while staying true to themselves.
