untitled freak – “birthday”

untitled freak is the solo project of Ali Genevich, who previously fronted shoegaze band Laveda. After their recording cycle with Laveda came to a close, Ali started writing and recording songs under her own moniker: untitled freak. The name came from the feeling experienced during this creative process – Ali describes it as the sensation of meeting a new, previously hidden part of yourself. The resulting music is a lo-fi, stripped-down slowcore sound with a faint gothic influence. In her minimal home studio, untitled freak crafts a sound that is moody and cathartic, a raw artistic expression.

The lyrics on the new single “birthday” sketch a person caught in an emotional loop – with repeating lines about feeling drained and overwhelmed by a deep relationship. The closeness they crave is met with a contradictory feeling of disconnection and vulnerability. Ali’s vocals are fragile and hushed, like this is something she can only admit in a whisper, as if speaking the truth too loudly might cause it to break apart or lose its meaning.

“To me this track is not so different to how I imagine some people experience synesthesia. When I listen to ‘birthday’ I’m somehow back in the kitchen of my first college apartment on Morris street. Maybe the song had always existed and was buried deep inside my head. I don’t remember writing it. I think it already existed somehow.”

“birthday” is released ahead of untitled freak’s upcoming EP, 7 circles, out March 13th, 2026. Preorder available here.
