“Coloring Pages,” the new single from Austin’s proun is out now ahead of the band’s debut album arriving next month. Written by bandleader, vocalist, and guitarist Jamie Weed, the track reflects on her coming-out experience. More specifically, it explores the moment of telling someone who has known you intimately your entire life – someone for whom this news may prompt a re-evaluation of both past and present.
Lyrically, the song revisits childhood memories – like coloring pages and toys – moments when gender feels irrelevant, and long before one understands what gender is or who they might become. The upcoming debut album, Maybe Luck, contemplates what it means to transition and move through the world as your truest self.
‘Coloring Pages’ is one of the most collaborative parts of the record. This song stems from an instrumental demo Dante sent me which outlined what became the drum, bass, and guitar parts. The instrumental felt like a departure from many of our other songs, embracing a more direct interaction between guitar and bass with more angular drums. I used this original demo as a canvas to write about coming out as trans to my mom and the feelings from that day. Parts feel like word vomit surrounded by memories of being a young child free from a gendered existence.
