King Krule’s recent release is one I’ve long awaited for. Those unreleased songs only ’heard of’ are here on a short, 4-track EP. Krule’s been known to distribute EPs of unreleased tracks at his shows, and has now decided to finalize some of those tracks to share with all so nobody’s missing out. Sounds fair right? That said and onto the tracks, I admire the different texture and tones traversed on all four songs. The first two tracks on the EP are everything I never realized I’ve been waiting to hear from King Krule, and then some. Achtung and Time For Slurp touch down in a dark, post punk realm. Time for Slurp comes accompanied by a black and white video featuring and directed by Krule. It gives off a vibe that naturally directs my thoughts to a bit of a Joy Division’s Shadowplay influence, both in the filming and song itself.
Fellow English band Idles did something similar on a video release for a song called When the Lights Come On a couples years back, and it’s definitely a nostalgic connection between the two I don’t mind making – if it’s dark and it makes me want to move, I’m in. The last two tracks, Whaleshark and It’s All Soup Now, gently direct the release back home to Archy’s fundamentals. Catchy, acoustic riffs with easily relatable lyrics that transit from light to cynically dark. Queue that with the album ending off in fun, distorted synths, and you have another masterpiece at play to enjoy.
