Horsegirl are a band of best friends and this connection comes out in their music time and time again. Coming off of a somewhat recent relocation to New York City from Chicago, the trio of friends (Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece) have been heads-down working on their next album, Phonetics On and On. From their upcoming release comes “Julie”, which serves as the album’s centerpiece. It’s tender and minimal, yet full of space and texture. It’s a pop song at it’s core, yet there’s avant-garde patches of vocals and synths. Learning that the album was produced from the avant-pop queen herself, Cate Le Bon, it is apparent that Horsegirl are moving in the direction of a more sonically distinctive path. These are the first songs the band had written outside of Penelope’s parents’ basement, and with this, Horsegirl are proving they are just getting started.
“Julie” comes from Horsegirl’s new album Phonetics On and On, out February 14, 2025 on Matador Records. Pre-save and pre-order the new album here.
The accompanying video for “Julie” was directed by Amsterdam-based animator Daphna Awadish Golan. The month-and-a-half-long animation process consisted of individually printing each frame of the background, and then hand-drawing with oil pastels on top. Using animals as stand-ins for people, the video further brings home the song’s themes of moving into a new city, the cold of winter, and unrequited love.
