The idea of a major A-list actor performing a set of R.E.M. covers on tour is a wild concept. R.E.M. is one of the most (if not the most) respected bands in indie and college radio circles, and doing them justice is a daunting task for anyone. Additionally, the touring life is not an easy one, even with all the amenities money can buy. Each day involves driving roughly 5–10 hours, soundchecking, performing, breaking down, and then trekking to the next city to do it all over again.
Michael Shannon has been doing just that for the past month. Alongside his band – which includes Jason Narducy, Jon Wurster (drums), John Stirratt (bass), Dag Juhlin (guitar), and Vijay Tellis-Nayak (piano) – Shannon has been performing Fables of the Reconstruction in full each night, in addition to many other R.E.M. songs. We had the pleasure of attending the tour’s Minneapolis stop at First Ave. The band started by playing the full-length album front-to-back without missing a single beat. Most impressive was Michael Shannon’s heartfelt respect for R.E.M.’s legacy. He sounded like someone who deeply loves the band and everything they represent. Michael Stipe, R.E.M.’s lead singer, poured his heart and soul into the music and lyrics, ensuring the same energy came through in live performances. Shannon rose to the occasion, delivering what can be argued as one of the best cover sets ever witnessed.
Typically, attending a cover set feels like a novelty – a way to enjoy the songs of a beloved band on a fun night out. However, this performance was anything but typical. Shannon and his band weren’t just paying homage to a great band; they were making a statement. And they certainly did just that on Wednesday night at First Ave. Everyone in the crowd was engaged from start to finish.
The audience skewed older but was just as enthusiastic as any rock show crowd. Among them were 60-year-olds in comfortable walking shoes, clearly unaccustomed to late nights. Drunk guys clinging to their youth, holding a beer in each hand. Women resting by the steps to the balcony, nursing the pain of standing too long in heels. But one thing was certain – everyone was there to honor one of the greatest bands of all time. Michael Shannon and his band proved themselves to be an absolute force to be reckoned with. Here’s hoping they are up for another tour and didn’t mind the road too much!
