The Fictionals – “Match”

The Fictionals recently formed in the post-covid creativity bloom in New York City (Brooklyn, to be exact), playing a variation of smooth, personality-fronted indie rock. In their latest single, the band waste no time introducing their audience to the personality that they effortlessly exude in their music. “Match” is sung and played with passion from the four-piece, an ode to love in modern times. In the song, love is portrayed as a card game of risk and reward – every moment is a bet, every connection a hand dealt by fate. The band cleverly uses this imagery, with the double meaning of the word “match,” to convey the act of “swiping” as if it were a game of chance. Much like a high-stakes card game, they suggest that the game of love can risk both fortune and disappointment.

With every chord and carefully chosen word, The Fictionals invite us to view our romantic endeavors as bold bets on serendipity. The message of the song lies in the fearless exploration of risk, the idea that one must be willing to gamble everything to experience the full blaze of passion.
