“Our Detour” is a first look at the collaboration between Shabason, Krgovich, and the duo Tenniscoats. The four are releasing a collaborative album titled Wao which will be out at the end of summer. This album came to fruition after Joseph Shabason and Nicholas Krgovich recruited Saya and Ueno of Tenniscoats to play in their backing band during a two-week run of shows in Japan back in 2024. This serendipitous meeting was orchestrated by Koji Saito of 7e.p. Records.
Despite meeting only twice to rehearse, their sound coalesced immediately and they deepened this connection during a two-day stay at the Guggenheim House in Kobe. The 117-year-old colonial-style residence, now converted to an artist residency, influenced the album’s recording style – its spacious, ambient sound captures the house’s creaks, while the faint rumble of nearby train tracks adds a depth to the recordings that feels stripped-back and intimate.
“Our Detour” features a sparse piano arrangement with flute touches and minimal percussion, letting each element breathe in the sonic space. Hushed, dual vocals weave through the melody, their soft timbres blending with the room’s natural reverb. Occasional brushstrokes on a snare drum add a gentle pulse to the warm-feeling track. Recorded live in a historic home, filled with musical improvisations and artistic elasticity, you can almost feel a creative moment that unfolds as both immediate and boundless.
“Our Detour” is released ahead of the collaborative album between Shabason, Krgovich, and Tenniscoats, Wao, out August 29, 2025 on Western Vinyl. Preorder available here.
