Wednesday – “Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)”

Wednesday began as a solo project and artistic outlet for Karly Hartzman, a North Carolina native. What initially started as a guitar-forward, noisy shoegaze project with elements of indie rock sincerity has now evolved into a more emotionally resonant band. In their recent singles, Wednesday has begun leaning toward a country-inflected style, showcasing their growth as a group.

“Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)” is Wednesday’s newest track, arriving ahead of their fifth full-length album, Bleeds, out this fall. The title references a line from a novel by Hartzman’s friend, Appalachian poet Evan Gray, and the lyrics draw on a secondhand story from another friend of hers. As she explains, “I just know when a story would make a good song… [it] feels very natural. I think that’s always been part of my process.” The story in question concerns a body pulled from a creek in West Virginia belonging to someone who had drowned. The band hails from Asheville, the budding hub of the South for country, Americana, and folk music, and on this song Hartzman’s whimsical, twangy vocals string you along while the rest of the band occasionally shift from soft rock to remind you of their noisy roots.

“Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)” is released ahead of Wednesday’s upcoming album, Bleeds, out September 19th, 2025 on Dead Oceans. Preorder available here.

Wednesday will be playing Project Pabst on July 27th, 2025 in Portland, Oregon!
