Long Fling’s debut track “Flung” is an undeniable banger folded under layers of experimentation. The new project is a collaboration between Pip Blom and Willem Smit (of Personal Trainer), who share vocal duties and songwriting, resulting in a product that is fresh and intriguing. The track contains various synths, “found sound” drum samples derived from banging the mic against various objects, and a “spanky” broken guitar that all aid in creating a track made for misfits, by misfits (and of misfits). It is Pip and Willem’s first time completing all aspects of a track, including the mixing, and as the first track debuting from the Amsterdam-based duo, represents years of collaboration and comfortability channeling that history into a sound that’s chaotically fun.
The initial verse is somewhat grating and goofy but it grows on you, and when the second verse hits, you understand that this is what Long Fling’s game is. It’s an unsuspecting sneak attack, lowering your inhibitions before you realize there’s some incredibly interesting production and musicality going on here. From sounding like a rough demo your buddy sent you, to sounding like a club banger, stitched together with some electro-pop interludes, the song beckons for a replay before it is even over.
“We’d never done everything including the mixing ourselves before. I think we both felt comfortable doing it this time because we were in it together, and we were okay with the idea that the record didn’t need to be super polished or perfect… When we each asked our dads whether the album sounded more like a Willem album or a Pip album, they both said the other’s name. I really feel like we made this album together – it’s a true blend of the both of us.”
