SKORTS from New York City has released their debut record, Incompletement. The release is long-awaited as the band is finally translating to record the fiery and energetic live shows they have been generating buzz around since their formation in 2023. SKORTS is Alli Walls (lead vocals and guitar), Char Smith (lead guitar), Emma Welch (bass) and Max Berdik (drums).
On the album’s title, the band explains, “Incompletement is a word we made up… To us, it means allowing oneself to live and create in an ever-changing state of impermanence.” This definition is reinforced through and through within the songs on the album.
The opener, “Burden,” rolls out a psychedelic rep carpet, setting the tone with a laid-back, hazy atmosphere that reverberates on the remaining tracks. “Bodies” explores “the nervous vulnerability that comes with new love,” its cautious riff underscoring the tension between excitement and hesitation. Momentum build with “Eat Your Heart Out,” where Walls’ belted out vocals inject raw energy, before easing into the more restrained “Steal The Night” and “Lace.”
The album surges again with “Dizzy,” a cathartic shout-alongthat revels in surrendering to one’s mischievous impulses. The album’s closer, “Anyone,” reflects on the “looping life cycle” of human connection – those uncanny moments of recognizing a soul as if you’ve met them before. It’s a meditation on intimacy and spiritual familiarity, like gazing into a mirror that reveals your own depths.
With Incompletement, SKORTS delivers a restless debut that feels fully realized, channeling impermanence into something tangible.
