Kevin Morby’s new single “Javelin” captures the ache of loving someone while constantly being on the move. Inspired by the experience of restlessly traveling the world with a partner only to return home alone to middle America, the song sets the tone for his upcoming album, Little Wide Open. Morby has said the new record is a very personal one, centering on life on the road and the small towns scattered across the Midwest.
With “Javelin,” Kevin Morby’s signature guitar playing and heartfelt lyrics are complimented by a very real vulnerability rooted in personal experience. Amelia Meath’s (Sylvan Esso) backing vocals add a gentle uplift towards the end of the track, but they never overshadow the song’s fragile core. Instead, they widen its emotional space, giving Morby’s reflections more room to breathe.
“Javelin” comes ahead of Kevin Morby’s upcoming seventh LP, Little Wide Open, which he’s described as the most personal and vulnerable album of his career. The track offers an early glimpse of Morby’s newly honed sense of restraint in the studio, shaped in part by producer Aaron Dessner’s guidance. In addition, Morby shares that the new album finishes out like an unintended trilogy – part one being 2020’s Sundowner and part two being 2022’s This Is A Photograph – a sequence tied together by the experience of moving back home to Kansas City for a time before relocating once again to Los Angeles, where he currently resides.
“Javelin” is released ahead of Kevin Morby’s upcoming album, Little Wide Open, out May 15th, 2026 via Dead Oceans. Preorder available here.
