The Octopus Project are a household name for anyone who is well-versed in psych-pop music of the early 2000s. That is why it was especially exciting to find out they wrote the filmscore for Sasquatch Sunset, and even more exciting to find out they were playing an exclusive intimate show for the film’s after party. The film, a comedy about a family of sasquatches, was produced by Ari Aster (Midsommer, Hereditary, Dream Scenario) and is out on April 19th, 2024.
The audience at Cheer Ups was comprised of cast and crew members and their families, and The Octopus Project’s electric performance swept everyone up and took them along for a groovy ride. It is a special moment seeing a band like The Octopus Project in a closed setting alongside enthusiastically dancing kids who are likely hearing and seeing this type of music for the first time. The band kicked off their set with an original score they wrote for the movie followed by some popular classics from their discography. They played a lot of live improvisation alongside their arrangement of synthesizers, drums and drum pads, string instruments, and theremin. Watching the four band members seamlessly transition between every song while also exchanging places and instruments makes it clear that they are seasoned musicians who have a synchronicity amongst each other.
