SXSW 2024 Coverage: The Spits

A band formed in Kalamozoo, MI were the closing band to play the Boogie Weekend showcase on Tuesday at SXSW. They left their soiled mark on everyone in the audience. Where most bands are focused on sounding tight and clean to impress music executives, The Spits are focused on hard, garage pummeling punk rock, played as loud as possible. The Spits were a breathe of fresh air by playing as hard and fast and ugly. The crowd responded by absolutely wrecking Hotel Vegas with the biggest mosh pit seen all week so far. The banter and antics were also a huge part of the set, from repeatedly requesting drinks, to them to saying obscene things I won’t write about here but can be viewed in our footage below. The band known for wacky costumes and a playful stage presence came out dressed as a robot and two trenchcoat-detectives, one of whom was concealing a mesh shirt underneath. It was a wild end to the festivities on Tuesday. If you’re around SXSW, they’re a must see and if they tour through your town, you gotta go. Punk rock will always have a place in the music landscape and so will The Spits.
