Unofficial SXSW 2024 Coverage: Greg Freeman

Greg Freeman from Burlington, VT is one of the leading voices in the music scene of his hometown. Once you see him live it is easy to see why. He has taken familiar sounds and ideas and spun them into something singular and unmistakably his own. His debut “I Looked Out” is a succinct apocalyptic album about a sinking 1920’s ocean liner, drawing parallels to his own emotions. A concept like that could come off as insincere but once you hear Greg’s first singing notes you can tell he means what he writes about. All at once, technical and full of emotional depth. His storytelling is immersive and his live show is completely engrossing.

Greg Freeman sounds like a record you stole from your dad’s record collection and claimed for yourself to show your friends. It also makes you think that maybe you did have cool, insightful parents that liked bands like one of Jason Molina’s projects (Magnolia Electric Co or Songs: Ohia), a noisier Uncle Tupelo, Silver Jews, Smog, and early Modest Mouse.
