Horsepower – “Excalibur”

Horsepower is the new project of New York-based songwriter and self-proclaimed former horse girl, Charlotte Weinman. “Excalibur” is her second single, an introspective and anger-fueled song that leans into Weinman’s talent for storytelling and conveying emotion through music. While Horsepower is primarily a solo project, it also has a strong family connection for Weinman. Her two brothers, Ben and Noah, are both working musicians who earned producer credits on the track, while her older sister, Emma, painted the cover art

Weinman steers clear of “feminine rage” tropes by refusing to aestheticize anger. Instead, she conveys these emotions with urgency and clarity, ensuring her lyrics directly communicate the depth of her feelings. Much of her inspiration comes from artists like Hole, Sleater-Kinney, and Kim Gordon; who she looks up to in terms of female artists who don’t hold back or stylize their emotions to fit societal expectations. By approaching her anger from an outside perspective, Weinman finds a way to balance the emotion with her own style, giving the song even more subjective depth.

“I was soooo mad when I wrote this song. Anger can be really hard for me to sustain, so writing this was an exercise in stamina for that. As I was writing, though, I started to find the anger kind of silly too, so there’s definitely an element of that in here. When we’re fighting righteous fights full of love, if we’re good to each other, we’re occupying both sides of the argument. In this song, I tried to capture the conflict from above — how stupidly unavoidable it feels to dig into a bad conversation at an inconvenient time.

-Charlotte Weinman, Horsepower

Horsepower embodies self-assured energy that comes through on “Excalibur,” demanding attention and not settling for something that sounds overly polished or restrained. The track thrives on its raw intensity, unapologetically embracing the power of unfiltered emotion and forceful expression. With gripping lyricism and a driving sound, Weinman channels her influences while forging her own path – one that refuses to conform, dilute, or compromise.

“Excalibur” is released ahead of Horsepower’s debut self-titled EP, out June 27th on Rose Garden. Pre-order available here.
