Icelandic pianist and post-classical composer Eydís Evensen has released “Eternal,” an ode to winter and darkness. Eydís Evensen’s delicate piano work and the seductive, breathy trumpet played by Ari Bragi Karason paints a collective image of yearning and loss, themes that are explored more throughly in Evensen’s upcoming album, out this fall. The two elements volley against each other throughout the song, echoing into the foreboding darkness. Natural forces appear to be a recurring theme of Evenson’s work and her compositions often mirror the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland’s landscapes – glacial stillness, volcanic tension, and oceanic depth – serving as metaphors for emotional states and existential reflection.
There was a heaviness and melancholia behind this piece, so I love that it’s coming out in the summertime – a sense of positivity even when it’s so dark,”
-Eydís Evensen on “Eternal”
Like distant storms rolling across a frozen sea, “Eternal” unfolds with a sense of spiritual meditation and serenity. Evensen channels the melancholia of Iceland’s winter into a sonic elegy, where light flickers faintly and nature’s cycles hold the point of truth. A place where warmth is a marvel to be appreciated. These themes continue in her upcoming album Oceanic Mirror, which explores the ocean’s contradictions – its power, movement, and healing depths – as metaphors for reincarnation, loss, and the undeniable rhythms of life.
“Eternal” is released ahead of Eydís Evensen’s upcoming album, Oceanic Mirror, out October 10, 2025 on XXIM/Sony.
