Austin local Lauren Lakis kicked off South by Southwest on Friday night at Stubb’s. Lauren Lakis played the indoor stage at Stubb’s, which is an intimate room that holds 150 people. Her indoor set was a refreshing contrast to the large amphitheater outside, where The Kills had just played alongside Heartworm to roughly a thousand people. The vast change of scenery and scale showed the varying landscape of SXSW as the conference draws artists from all across the globe.
Lauren Lakis’ set was riddled with technical difficulties, but like a professional musician, she pushed through and provided us with a great start to SXSW 2024. Lauren’s vocals shined through as her backing band, who looked like they’d been playing together for a long time, complimented her on stage well. One of the best moments of the set was when her guitar gave out on her and she had to play one of older songs solo on stage while the issues were being ironed out. What could have been a disaster, turned into a quiet intimate moment with Lauren Lakis. For brevity, we trimmed the video below so it just includes just the first 30 minutes of the set.
